From Friday anyone within EU can register their own .eu Internet domain name
04 Apr 2006
Several hundred thousand new .eu domain names expected when
EURid opens at 11:00 on Friday
The new Internet top level domain .eu was introduced in December last year, but
until now only holders of prior rights have been eligible to apply for their protected
names. From Friday though, it is possible for anyone within the European Union to
simply register whatever available .eu domain name they want on a first come first
served basis.
“Nobody knows exactly how many registrations of new domain names to expect for Friday, but
the interest so far has been significant so I think we will see several hundred thousand proud
holders of brand new .eu domain names from Friday and onwards, says Marc Van Wesemael,
Managing Director at EURid, the not-for-profit organisation that operates the .eu Internet
domain.
Starting Friday, April 7, the process of getting an .eu domain name will be plain and simple.
Anyone interested just needs to get in contact with one of the more than 1 000 accredited .eu
registrars who will assist potential .eu domain name holders.
Currently, during the phased registration often referred to as Sunrise, when only holders of
prior rights have been able to apply, EURid has received more than 300 000 applications which
are now being processed.
Note to the editor:
It is possible to monitor the number of domain names registered on EURid’s website
(www.eurid.eu). The statistics page (http://status.eurid.eu) is updated every 15 minutes and
on it one can see how many domain names are registered in total and per country. EURid is
expecting it to take a few hours from 11:00 on Friday to process all the pre-registrations that
registrars have been accepting over the last few months.
